About Gail Sparks
Gail Sparks has had an extensive career in the civil service and non-profit arenas spanning nearly two decades. During the 10 years she worked for the Board of County Commissioners as an Eligibility Specialist and Case Manager she spent her time fighting for those in the community who truly needed various types of public assistance, whether they were seniors, single mothers, the disabled, or the mentally ill.
Although she encountered a lot of apathy and political appointees who viewed people as case files, Gail was truly committed to using every resource at her disposal to ensure that those in need got benefits, whether food stamps, Medicaid/Medicare, housing assistance, or child support. She was also heavily involved in outreach and advocacy, conducting and preparing for state hearings, and working with sympathetic community organizations and government officials. Gail’s commitment to understanding and helping people is underlined by her decision to obtain a degree in psychology. Later, she earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration. Thus, she is both compasionate and results oriented.
More recently, after leaving county government she opened her own boutique in Larchmere and became part of the fabric of the local business community. In addition, working together with her husband Brian, she became a property owner and manager, rehabilitating housing, and specializing in providing low-income housing to individuals in need on the Eastside. She is well aware of the challenges that exist for both landlords and tenants in low income communities, such as Ward 4, and the cost dynamics involved.
Gail cares deeply about her community and she is greatly angered by the lack of attention and abject neglect of our Mayor and City Council, including Ken Johnson, in helping Eastside communities. She cannot understand how our elected officials can turn their backs on their own constituents and neighbors. This is why she has decided to run for City Council, because Ward 4 residents desire a representative that truly cares about people, not power, and who is more interested in results than in keeping up appearances.
